Church History
Founding-Early 1970's
The original "Chinese Gospel Mission" was founded and built by the late Rev. Frank Fung in 1948. The building was located on 8th Street between "U" and "V", in Sacramento CA. The work began as an outreach into the Chinese community, specifically for children and families. Rev. Fung kept the work primarily as a mission. In 1967, Rev. Sen Wong came to Sacramento to lead the church. He took two steps:
(1) incorporate the church by changing her name to Chinese Grace Bible Church (CGBC)
(2) relocate the congregation
What began in 1970 as the church's first building project was realized in 1973 when the congregation moved to its present site on Park Riviera Way and Surfside Way. The 2-story Education building was completed and dedicated that year.
Middle 1970's to Late 1980's
After the departure of Rev. Sen Wong, Rev. Gershom Lee accepted leadership of the church. He expanded CGBC by building the present sanctuary, which seats up to 420 people. This began in mid-1978 and was completed in the Spring of 1980. Under the leadership of Dr. Alan Ginn, steps were taken to pay off the mortgages of the facilities. By the end of the 1980's, the church was debt-free. This allowed CGBC to focus resources towards hiring church staff, giving opportunities for seminarians to participate in CGBC¡¦s pastoral intern program, and increasing support for missionaries and endeavors that would make the Gospel known throughout the world. In being debt-free, the church was able to call pastors that could minister, teach, and shepherd flocks for each language group¡XEnglish, Cantonese, and Mandarin. By the end of this period, the Pastoral Ministry Team included Dr. Alan Ginn, Pastor Edward Lee, and Pastor Seahawk Lun, and the church were able to have respective services and ministries geared for each language.
1990's to Present
With the growing need for classrooms, arrangements were made with the Merryhill School across the street to rent their facilities for Sunday use. On October 31, 1993, the church formed three separate Sunday services: Cantonese, English and Mandarin. In the 1990's, the Strategy Resource Committee (SRC) was formed and formulated a ten-year plan. After obtaining inputs and findings, a recommendation was submitted to the Executive Board and the following 7-fold Vision Statements were approved:
(1) 3-in-1 Model Church
(2) Multiplying Church
(3) Cell-Care Group Based Church
(4) Conversion Growing Church
(5) Selecting & Sending Church
(6) Stewardship Oriented Church
(7) Supplication Church
During the 1990's, the pastoral staff increased to four with the addition of Pastor Ted Pricskett. During this period, the church also planted a new work in the Laguna-Elk Grove area of Greater Sacramento. This five-year relationship with River Ridge Neighborhood Church (RRNC) began in 1995 and culminated in 2000. Presently, there is a permanent full time pastor at RRNC.
Recently, CGBC's leadership re-affirmed the 3-in-1 model church at Chinese Grace Bible. There are discussions of long range plans and direction, which include the preliminary ideas of church planting, relocation, and hiring.
